My Tourguide path started in 2002 with my focus being solely on Walking Tours and Wine Tours. Stellenbosch and environs has a very close-knit guiding community and very soon I met the “Tour-Dynamo” Gudrun Grunewald. I was blown away by Gudrun’s work-ethic and disciplined approach. I started doing more and more tours for Gudrun and in the process began hearing of this “wonderful guy” with a “wonderful little bus”, Barend Radyn. In the early 2010’s Gudrun saw an opportunity in the Flower Tour market and soon her and Barend were up-ping and down-ning to Namaqualand in full force. After all these years I think Barend knows every road and every “flower-spot” there is to be seen in Namaqualand. I think us tourguides have driven the poor man to despair at times, BUT Barend is always the gentlemen, always full of jokes and smiles, always helpful and friendly to everyone – we could not do these tours without Barend!
I mean who cannot love that face?! (Jammer Elze!) And as Gudrun started moving away from the Flower Tour scene she asked me to step in and I started working with Barend. This has been some of the best years of my career and we have had so much fun. I got completely “hooked” by the blommetjies and the region and the people of Namaqualand and even schemed myself to be a bit of an “amateur Botanist”. After Covid I decided to retire from the Flower Tour world but I have missed it too much and at the end of last year Barend and I decided we have to go back! We are very excited to hit the road again and so looking forward to meeting many new friends on our tours. And this is how you will likely see a lot of me = groveling in the veld trying to get the best pic!
